Stuff to Do in OKC: Take a Group Charcuterie Class!
If there is an off chance I am not setting up grazing tables on a weekend, I always ask the question, “What is some fun stuff to do in OKC?” If you are not local, when I say OKC, I mean, Oklahoma City. Slang is easier! Living in the capital of Oklahoma has its privileges. We have top notch dining, riverboat adventures, plaza district, myriad gardens, and scissortail park. It sure is amazing to have so much stuff to do in OKC!
I get asked the question a lot if I teach charcuterie classes. The answer to that is, “yes!” I love getting the opportunity to teach classes. Some of the reasons why it is so enjoyable to teach charcuterie classes is my client’s realizing charcuterie doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. That is probably the main reason most haven’t made their own charcuterie boards if I were to guess. I felt the same way about sourdough bread making, until I took a class. I thought it would be too difficult to keep the mother (fermented dough) alive and how exactly to “feed” it. After taking a class with my friend who own’s a sourdough business, A Baker’s Heart, I have now made at least a dozen loaves. I have even kept my other alive for about 6 months now! Go me!
Learning a new skill isn’t typically what people think about regarding stuff to do in OKC, but it should be! Charcuterie classes is a fun group activity in the metro that are both enjoyable and interactive. I always tell my clients you get to embrace toddlerhood and get to play with your food. When is the last time you got to make creative designs, cuts, and folds with your foods? Usually we are in the kitchen preparing meals because we have to, but with classes, it’s a laid back atmosphere that is a lot of fun!
Why a Charcuterie Class should be on your list for stuff to do in OKC
It’s Interactive –you get to create your own masterpiece.
It’s Social – Chat, laugh, and bond while you build your boards together.
It’s Delicious – Every creation is yours to snack on (or show off on Instagram first or share, or not, with your spouse!)
It’s Customizable – We can tailor boards to seasonal flavors, holidays, or even themed events. Galentine’s anyone?! I also teach fundraising classes too!
When you arrive at the class, we will play a fun guessing game and the winners will win some fun door prizes. The prize may or may not be an item you can use for your next charcuterie board. Each class participant will have their own cutting board, paring knife, charcuterie box, napkin, and of course charcuterie foods. We are also able to accommodate those who are gluten sensitive or vegetarian.
Classes last about an hour to an hour and a half depending on the class size. We will learn all about the art of making a charcuterie board. You will take away skills such as arranging and cutting several cheese as well as making a salami rose. Who wouldn’t want to be a meat florist after all?!
Our OKC group charcuterie classes are ideal for:
• Girls’ night out
• Birthday parties
• Corporate team building
• Family gatherings
• Holiday celebrations
Whether you’re a foodie, a creative type, or just someone who loves cheese (and honestly, who doesn’t?), this is one activity you’ll want to add to your stuff to do in OKC bucket list!
We also talk about the importance of what foods to style first and which foods to sprinkle in last. There is a methodology to the art process. Temperature sensitive foods such as cheeses and meats are important to do last as you want to make sure you are making a board that is safe for your guests to enjoy.
As with art, I tell those whom take my class that are no rules when it comes to charcuterie. Art isn’t like math were two plus two equals four. There is a lot of grey area and that is the same with charcuterie. You may have more strawberries on hand than you do blueberries and that is fine! It does not have to be an even split of all your charcuterie food elements. I always tell my class participants the main thing to have on your charcuterie board is foods that you enjoy eating.
Charcuterie classes bring people together and that is the most important part. Gathering around the table to learn, laugh, and eat is an evening well spent. Trying new foods is also a fan favorite and we make sure that there are cheese samples at the end to do just that! We would be honored if you chose to spend an evening with us learning the art of charcuterie!
